Lice. Just the thought of it makes you itch. It strikes fear in the heart of this mother of two daughters with long & thick hair and two sons (who just got a crew cut). One kid picked it up somewhere and now we’re in the thick of it. Shampooing, nit-picking, bagging up the stuffed animals, vacuuming, spraying, shampooing and nit-picking some more and LAUNDRY, LAUNDRY, LAUNDRY! Just when you think you have it under control a child scratches her head and panic strikes! Another intruding little egg-laying monster that MUST die has arrived on the scene.
I was frustrated tonight about going around the same old mountain in my thought life. Wasn’t I in this exact same place this time last year? Wasn’t I fighting this exact same battle? Why, God? WHY?! My thoughts haven’t changed….or more correctly I keep slipping into the same way of thinking that I used to think, even when I’ve learned new ways of thinking.
Then I realized, keeping old thoughts from invading my life is like getting rid of lice. It is not going to happen on it’s own and the more I allow it to go unchecked, the more old thoughts are going to grow and invade my mind. I have to diligently pick each and every thought and lie that is trying to make a home in my mind out by it’s roots and regularly check to make sure that they do not return.
Sounds exhausting. For sure, it does take work. There are tons of things the Bible suggests for renewing the mind. You can read about them at http://biblehub.com/romans/12-2.htm. But Jesus said in Matthew 11:29 & 30 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Check out https://www.gotquestions.org/yoke-easy-burden-light.html as a great description of what Jesus was talking about when he spoke about a yokes.
Why I include those verses here is because in the job of renewing our mind, we can find it an enjoyable thing when we just spend time in relationship with Jesus. Take my yoke upon you (which is light) AND learn from me. Learn the truth, learn right thinking, learn about love and all that God has for you. He said he is gentle and humble in heart and that we will find rest in Him. It’s an invitation to rest with the best! Just thinking about it now brings me peace in my busy mind. Helps me to hope that I don’t have to keep going round and round with these same old sinful thoughts that keep me feeling hopeless, guilty, shameful and lost.
Be diligent, just as diligent as if a terrible, nasty bug was trying to build a nest in your thick-luxurious-beautiful hair to cleanse yourself of wrong thoughts and lies by spending time with the one that thought so much of you that He gave up His life to save yours. He took all of those wrong and destructive thoughts so that you wouldn’t have to suffer them. He’s there with His nit-picking comb to examine your mind and remove any thought that doesn’t belong if you will spend time with Him and allow Him to do so.
